On World Lung Cancer Day, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) joins health organisations and communities worldwide in raising awareness about lung cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths globally.
This day serves as an important reminder not only to advocate for early detection, prevention, and research, but also to acknowledge the often-overlooked emotional and mental health challenges that accompany a lung cancer diagnosis.
“Facing a life-changing diagnosis like lung cancer affects more than just the body,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “Patients, families, and carers alike endure a psychological toll that demands just as much care and compassion as the physical symptoms. That’s where vocationally trained mental health practitioners come in providing real-time, community-based support in the moments it’s needed most.”
From shock and fear at diagnosis, to the emotional strain of treatment, to post-treatment adjustment and grief support, vocational practitioners - counsellors, peer workers, and psychosocial support professionals - play a vital role in supporting the full human experience of cancer care.
VMHPAA stands alongside medical professionals, researchers, and advocacy organisations to call for:
Greater integration of mental health support in oncology and respiratory services
Investment in preventive health strategies that promote lung health for all Australians
Inclusion of vocationally trained mental health practitioners in palliative, hospice, and survivorship care teams
“Healing is never just physical,” Warren added. “It’s emotional. It’s relational. And it’s personal. We must honour the whole person in the journey through cancer.”
As we honour those fighting lung cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and celebrate the tireless work of researchers and carers, let’s also reaffirm our commitment to holistic care that includes the mind as well as the body.
