World Health Day: VMHPAA Urges Australians to Prioritise Mental Health Alongside Physical Wellbeing

In recognition of World Health Day, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association Australia (VMHPAA) is calling for renewed national focus on mental health as a key pillar of overall wellbeing.

While the theme of World Health Day this year continues to spotlight global access to healthcare, VMHPAA reminds Australians that mental health must be treated with the same urgency and respect as physical health in policy, in service delivery, and in everyday conversations.

“You can’t be truly healthy if your mind is suffering,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA and a clinical mental health consultant with over 33 years of experience.“On World Health Day, let’s not just think about blood pressure and fitness. Let’s also ask: Am I okay mentally? Are the people around me okay? Because mental wellbeing is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.”

VMHPAA encourages all Australians to:

  • Take time for self-care, rest, and mental check-ins

  • Engage in open discussions around mental wellbeing in the workplace and at home

  • Support local and vocationally trained mental health professionals

  • Advocate for accessible mental health services for all, especially in underserved communities

Whether it’s a short walk, a therapy session, or a moment of stillness, small acts of self-care add up, and help create a culture where mental health is valued, protected, and supported.

This World Health Day, take care of your whole self - mind and body.
