Supervision: Supporting Safe, Ethical, and Effective Practice

At the Australian Association of Mental Health Practitioners (AAMHP), we believe that ongoing clinical supervision is not just best practice - it is essential.

Supervision provides a vital space for reflection, professional development, ethical guidance, and emotional support, ensuring that practitioners maintain the highest standards of care while sustaining their own wellbeing in what is often deeply challenging work.
Our Position on Supervision

To uphold the integrity and quality of vocational and tertiary qualified practitioners providing mental health care, clinical supervision is a mandatory requirement for all AAMHP members actively engaged in client-facing roles. This ensures that every practitioner is supported in maintaining safe, effective, and ethical standards of practice.

Regular supervision helps practitioners:

  1. Reflect on their work and navigate complex cases

  2. Ensure they are practicing safely, ethically, and within scope

  3. Grow their skills and clinical knowledge

  4. Maintain resilience and prevent burnout

Peer supervision is a very valuable part of every practitioner's growth, is one on one supervision, reflective practice, amongst registered counsellors, psychotherapists or hypnotherapist practitioners who have been Clinical Registrants with AAMHP, or a previous association, for five (5) continuous years.

Please only record peer supervision if you are eligible to do so.  A maximum of four (4) peer supervision hours per annum applies. The balance (a minimum total amount of ten (10) hours per annum, which may include peer or group supervision) must be with a registered Supervisor.

Your registered supervisor will be responsible for signing off on your PD and Supervision Certificate when your registration is due for renewal.  This document can be found on the Members Log In (this applies to Counselling and Psychotherapy or Hypnotherapy Members only).

Supervision Support Through AAMHP

We understand that access to quality supervision must be affordable and flexible — especially for vocational practitioners working across a wide range of settings. That’s why AAMHP offers several pathways to meet your supervision requirements:

Supervision Network Within Our Membership

Many of our members are experienced supervisors, offering individual and group sessions tailored to vocational mental health practice. Whether you're looking for culturally appropriate supervision, peer-informed support, or specialist insight, we can help you find a supervisor who fits your needs.

Supervision external to AAMHP

You may already have a relationship with a qualified Supervisor who is external to the AAMHP network.  As long as they are registered with a peak professional body as a Supervisor, AAMHP will accept them signing off on your Supervision and Professional Development mandatory requirements to maintain your valid membership.

Online Group Supervision – Powered by Neuro Balance Australasia

Through our partnering relationship with Neuro Balance Australasia, AAMHP members have access to twice-monthly online group supervision sessions at an equitable and highly affordable rate.

These sessions:

  • Are led by qualified, experienced supervisors

  • Create a collaborative, supportive learning environment

  • Cater to vocational and tertiary qualified practice and meet real-world challenges

  • Are scheduled to be accessible to practitioners across Australia
