VMHPAA Marks World Bipolar Day by Calling for Compassionate Conversation and Stronger Support Systems

The Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association Australia (VMHPAA) joins individuals and organisations around the world in recognising World Bipolar Day, an annual day of awareness held on March 30 to reduce stigma and improve understanding of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder affects approximately 1 in 50 Australians each year, yet it remains widely misunderstood and often misrepresented. Today, VMHPAA urges all Australians to engage in open, informed conversations and help dismantle the harmful myths that continue to surround this complex mental health condition.

“Raising awareness is only the beginning,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “We need to go further, toward empathy, investment in services, and ensuring that vocationally trained professionals are equipped to provide informed, respectful, and effective support for people living with bipolar disorder.”

World Bipolar Day is an opportunity to:

  • Encourage open dialogue about bipolar disorder in workplaces, schools, and homes

  • Promote the availability of early intervention and evidence-based treatment

  • Support individuals and families by connecting them to informed practitioners

  • Challenge outdated stereotypes with education and lived experience stories

“Seeking help is not a weakness, it is an act of courage,” added Warren. “Our role as mental health practitioners is to ensure that help is accessible, judgement-free, and affirming of every person's unique journey.”

The VMHPAA invites mental health professionals and community organisations to share resources, attend or host events, and contribute to the growing momentum for compassionate mental health reform.
