MEDIA RELEASE / AWARENESS STATEMENT
For Immediate Release
1st June 2026

During Pride Month, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) acknowledges and celebrates the contributions of LGBTIQA+SB individuals to our shared national story.
Pride Month is not only a celebration of identity, it is a recognition of resilience, advocacy, creativity, leadership, and community-building. LGBTIQA+SB Australians contribute across every sector of society, in healthcare, education, business, the arts, public service, and community life.
Pride is both historical and contemporary. It honours those who fought for visibility and equality, and it recognises the ongoing work required to maintain dignity and safety.
VMHPAA Chair Shane Warren said:
“Pride is not separate from national pride, it is part of it. A confident nation is one that makes space for difference. When people can live authentically and safely, mental wellbeing improves and communities grow stronger.” [Shane Warren]
Research consistently demonstrates that inclusion is protective. When LGBTIQA+SB individuals feel affirmed and supported, rates of psychological distress decrease and resilience increases. Conversely, discrimination and stigma remain key drivers of mental health disparity.
Pride Month invites us to:
Reflect on the progress made toward equality
Continue addressing discrimination and marginalisation
Strengthen inclusive policies and services
Celebrate diversity as a national strength
Support young people navigating identity and belonging
VMHPAA affirms that diversity does not weaken society, it enriches it.
Pride is about visibility.
It is about dignity.
And it is about ensuring that every person can participate fully in the life of our nation.
This Pride Month, we celebrate not only identity but contribution, courage, and community.
