VMHPAA Celebrates Pohela Boishakh 2026: Honouring Renewal, Community and Cultural Connection

The Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) extends warm wishes to the Bengali community across Australia and around the world as they celebrate Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year.

Pohela Boishakh is a vibrant celebration of renewal, hope, culture, and community. Marked by traditional music, art, food, gatherings, and expressions of gratitude, it is a reminder that new beginnings are woven deeply into human experience.

VMHPAA Chair Shane Warren said:

“New Year celebrations across cultures carry a shared message, that no matter what has passed, there is space to begin again. Pohela Boishakh reminds us of the strength found in community, tradition, and collective hope.”

For many migrants and diaspora communities in Australia, cultural celebrations such as Pohela Boishakh are more than festivals, they are anchors of identity, belonging, and intergenerational connection. These protective factors are strongly linked to positive mental wellbeing.

VMHPAA Secretary Susan Sandy added:

“When communities gather to celebrate heritage, they reinforce connection and resilience. Cultural pride and shared tradition can be powerful buffers against isolation and stress.”

At a time when global uncertainty can impact emotional wellbeing, Pohela Boishakh offers a meaningful opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect not only with cultural roots, but with one another.

VMHPAA encourages all Australians to celebrate the rich diversity that strengthens our nation and to recognise the importance of inclusive, culturally responsive mental health support.

To those celebrating - Shubho Noboborsho (Happy New Year). May the year ahead bring renewal, prosperity, and wellbeing.
