Aged Care Employee Day: Honouring the People Who Care for Those Who Once Cared for Us

On Aged Care Employee Day, the Australian Association of Mental Health Practitioners (AAMHP) honours the dedication, compassion and professionalism of aged care employees across Australia.
Aged care workers hold an essential place in our communities. Their work is practical, emotional and deeply human. They support older Australians with dignity, patience and respect, often forming meaningful relationships with residents, clients, families and carers during some of life’s most vulnerable stages.
AAMHP Chair Shane Warren said:
“Aged care employees do far more than complete tasks. They provide comfort, connection, reassurance and dignity. They are often the people who notice small changes, listen to life stories, hold space for grief, and bring humanity into everyday care. AAMHP recognises that aged care work can also carry a significant emotional load. Supporting older people, people living with dementia, those experiencing loneliness, and families navigating grief or transition requires skill, resilience and compassion. Workers in this sector deserve safe workplaces, meaningful support, appropriate training, and recognition for the vital role they play in the health and wellbeing of our ageing population.
Aged care is not only about physical care. It is about belonging, identity, memory, relationship and dignity. Mental health and emotional wellbeing remain important across the whole lifespan, and aged care employees are often central to protecting those human needs in everyday practice.
AAMHP Secretary Susan Sandy said:

On Aged Care Employee Day, AAMHP says thank you to personal care workers, nurses, lifestyle coordinators, allied health workers, cooks, cleaners, administration teams, volunteers, managers, maintenance staff and every person who contributes to the aged care sector.
