Take Your Dog To Work Day: Celebrating Companionship, Connection, and Canine Joy

Today, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association Australia (VMHPAA) invites workplaces across the country to embrace the tail-wagging joy of Take Your Dog To Work Day - a lighthearted occasion with a heartwarming message at its core.

Far more than just an excuse for cute selfies and furry office visitors, this day reminds us of the power of companionship, emotional support, and unconditional love, qualities our dogs offer freely and without judgment.

“It seems so simple and maybe even a little silly,” says Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA and long-time mental health practitioner,“but celebrating the companionship of pets, and in this case, dogs - reminds us that as humans we all just need to feel loved and loved unconditionally sometimes. So let’s celebrate our four-legged friends, but let’s also remember to love those around us and to show it, unconditionally, just like our dogs do.”

Research consistently shows that pets, especially dogs, contribute to improved mood, reduced stress, and stronger social bonds in the workplace. In a post-pandemic world where mental wellbeing is front of mind, initiatives like Take Your Dog To Work Day offer playful but powerful ways to spark connection and lower stress.

VMHPAA champions mental health strategies that are human, holistic, and sometimes even a little hairy. From therapy animals in clinical settings to simply letting the office dog sit in on meetings, small moments of shared affection can have big impacts.

So whether it’s for the tail wags, the lunchroom mischief, or the silent support they offer, today we celebrate our canine colleagues. And we encourage every Australian to take a moment to share a little unconditional love, not just with their pets, but with each other.
