Today, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) proudly recognises National Coming Out Day - a day to celebrate the courage it takes to live authentically and to stand in solidarity with all members of the LGBTIQA+ community.
Coming out is deeply personal. For some, it’s a joyful declaration of identity and belonging; for others, it can be a process marked by uncertainty, fear, or risk. Whatever stage of the journey someone is on, their story and identity are valid.
“Living authentically is an act of bravery, one that deserves to be honoured and supported,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “When people feel safe to be themselves, we see stronger mental health outcomes, healthier communities, and a society grounded in respect and empathy.”
VMHPAA recognises that acceptance and visibility play a crucial role in promoting mental wellbeing and resilience within the LGBTIQA+ community. Stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion continue to impact mental health, highlighting the importance of inclusive support systems and affirming care.
On National Coming Out Day, VMHPAA calls on workplaces, schools, and community organisations to foster environments where diversity is celebrated and every person feels seen, safe, and supported.
To everyone who has come out, is thinking about it, or continues to navigate their journey we acknowledge you are valid, you are loved, and you are not alone.
