Investing in Youth, Investing in the Future: VMHPAA Recognises International Youth Day

Today on International Youth Day, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA)reaffirms its commitment to supporting the mental wellbeing of young people across the country.

As Australia’s future leaders, carers, educators, and change-makers, young people deserve access to early, accessible, and culturally responsive mental health support. Yet too often, young people are left navigating mental health challenges alone, particularly those in regional areas, those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and LGBTIQA+SB youth.

“Youth mental health is not just a public health issue, it’s a nation-building priority,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “We must ensure young Australians have safe spaces to be heard, healed, and supported. That’s where vocationally trained practitioners step in offering grounded, early intervention services embedded in schools, communities, and local support networks.”

Vocationally trained mental health professionals - including school counsellors, youth workers, peer mentors, and welfare officers - are often the first point of contact for young people struggling with mental health concerns. Their work is vital in breaking down stigma, building resilience, and fostering hope.

“Young people need to know they’re not alone,” said Susan Sandy, VMHPAA Secretary and a wellbeing officer with over two decades of experience working in youth and family services. “Sometimes it’s a single conversation with a trusted adult that can change the direction of a young person’s life.”

On this International Youth Day, VMHPAA calls for:

  • Greater investment in school and community-based youth mental health programs

  • Formal recognition of vocationally trained practitioners within national workforce strategies

  • Accessible, youth-led mental health education that meets young people where they are

This year’s global theme reminds us: the health of our youth is the health of our future. Let’s invest in prevention, connection, and community... starting today.
