International Day of Love: Honouring Love in All Its Forms
International Day of Love: Honouring Love in All Its Forms

On the International Day of Love, often marked as Valentine’s Day, VMHPAA recognises that love is broader than romance. It is found in friendship, family, community, self-compassion, and the quiet commitment we make to care for one another.

For some, today is a celebration of partnership and connection. For others, it may be a reminder of loss, loneliness, or change. However this day is experienced, all emotions are valid.

VMHPAA Chair Shane Warren reflected on the mental health dimension of love:

“Love is not just something we give it’s something we cultivate within ourselves. Healthy relationships begin with self-respect, boundaries, and emotional awareness. Whether single or partnered, nurturing self-worth and compassion is foundational to mental wellbeing.”

Being single can be a powerful time of growth, self-discovery, and renewal. Being in a relationship can be a time of shared strength, care, and mutual support. Both experiences hold value. Neither defines a person’s worth.

International Day of Love is an opportunity to:

  • Celebrate meaningful relationships

  • Practice self-compassion

  • Strengthen emotional literacy

  • Reach out to someone who may be feeling alone

  • Reflect on how we show care to ourselves and to others

Love, in its healthiest form, promotes psychological safety, resilience, and connection. It reminds us that belonging is a core human need.

If today brings up difficult feelings, please know that support is available. Caring for your mental wellbeing is one of the most important forms of love you can practice.

On this day, VMHPAA encourages all Australians to honour love in all its forms gently, inclusively, and without pressure or expectation.
