On Earth Day (April 22), the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) recognises that the health of our planet is deeply connected to the health of our communities and our minds.
Earth is not separate from us. It is the foundation of our safety, our food systems, our water, our shelter, and our sense of place. Environmental stability supports social stability and social stability supports mental wellbeing.
As climate events increase and environmental concerns grow, many Australians, particularly young people, are experiencing eco-anxiety, uncertainty, and distress about the future.
VMHPAA Chair Shane Warren said:
“Planetary health and mental health are intertwined. When communities feel powerless in the face of environmental change, anxiety rises. But when people take collective action, even small steps, hope grows. Agency is protective.” [Shane Warren]
Earth Day is not simply about awareness; it is about responsibility and renewal. Small, consistent actions by reducing waste, conserving resources, supporting sustainable practices, advocating for policy change all contribute to both environmental and psychological resilience.
VMHPAA Secretary Susan Sandy added:
“Caring for the environment can strengthen connection to community, to purpose, and to future generations. Reminding us that hope is built when we act together.” [Susan Sandy]
On Earth Day, VMHPAA encourages Australians to:
Reflect on our shared responsibility
Support sustainable community initiatives
Talk openly with young people about climate concerns
Channel worry into constructive action
Every small action matters.
Protecting our planet is not only an environmental issue it is a human wellbeing issue.
Together, we can nurture both the Earth and each other.
