World Sight Day 2025 - Prioritising Eye Health and Inclusive Wellbeing

Today, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) joins the global community in recognising World Sight Day - a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye health and advocating for accessible vision care for all.

Good vision is fundamental to wellbeing. It affects how we learn, work, and connect; yet millions of people around the world live with preventable or untreated vision impairment. Early detection and regular eye checkups are key to maintaining healthy sight and reducing avoidable blindness.

“Sight is not just about what we see, but how we engage with the world around us,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “Protecting our vision is part of protecting our independence, confidence, and quality of life. Accessible eye care must be seen as a core part of holistic health.”

The VMHPAA emphasises that vision health is also deeply linked to mental wellbeing. Visual impairment can contribute to social isolation, depression, and anxiety highlighting the need for integrated, person-centred approaches that consider both physical and emotional health.

On World Sight Day, VMHPAA encourages all Australians to:

  • Book a regular eye checkup.

  • Support inclusive workplaces and communities for people with vision impairments.

  • Advocate for accessible health systems that leave no one behind.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the gift of sight and commit to ensuring accessible eye care for everyone.
