During World Breastfeeding Week, the Australian Association for Mental Health Practitioners (AAMHP) recognises the importance of supporting mothers, babies, and families throughout their infant feeding journey.
Breastfeeding can provide significant health benefits for both mother and child. It can also be a deeply meaningful experience that strengthens early attachment and connection. However, for many women, breastfeeding may also bring physical, emotional, and practical challenges that deserve understanding rather than judgement.
AAMHP Chair Shane Warren said:
"The arrival of a child is often described as one of life's happiest moments, but it is also one of its biggest adjustments. Whether breastfeeding comes easily or presents challenges, every mother deserves encouragement, evidence-based support, and compassion. Looking after a baby's wellbeing begins by looking after the wellbeing of the parent." [Shane Warren]
The early months of parenthood can be accompanied by sleep deprivation, changing identities, anxiety, postnatal depression, and the pressure to meet expectations. Access to practical support, trusted health professionals, family, and community can make a significant difference.
AAMHP recognises that feeding decisions are personal and may be influenced by medical circumstances, individual choice, or family needs. Every family's journey is different, and every parent deserves to feel respected and supported.
AAMHP Secretary Susan Sandy, drawing on her experience in relationship counselling and school welfare, said:
"Parents don't need perfection they need support. When mothers feel heard, informed, and cared for, they are better placed to care for their children. Supporting parental mental health is one of the greatest investments we can make in the next generation." [Susan Sandy]
World Breastfeeding Week is an opportunity to:
Support mothers without judgement.
Promote access to evidence-based breastfeeding and parenting support.
Recognise the importance of perinatal mental health.
Encourage families, workplaces, and communities to support new parents.
Celebrate every parent's commitment to giving their child the best possible start in life.
Healthy beginnings are built on compassionate support, informed choice, and communities that stand alongside families through every stage of the parenting journey.
