During Women’s Health Week, the Australian Association of Mental Health Practitioners (AAMHP) celebrates the strength, resilience, and contribution of women across our communities, while recognising that women’s health requires sustained attention, advocacy, and support.
Women’s health is not limited to physical wellbeing. It encompasses mental health, emotional resilience, reproductive health, workplace equity, caregiving responsibilities, and protection from violence and discrimination.
AAMHP Chair Shane Warren said:
“Women’s health is foundational to community wellbeing. When women are supported physically and psychologically, families and communities thrive. Prioritising women’s health is not a niche issue, it is a public health priority.” Shane Warren said.
Across Australia, women continue to experience disproportionate burdens including unpaid caregiving, workplace inequality, higher rates of certain chronic illnesses, and gender-based violence. These pressures can significantly impact phsyical and mental wellbeing.
Women are also more likely to seek support yet still face stigma, dismissal of symptoms, or barriers to care.
AAMHP Secretary Susan Sandy reflected:
“In clinical and school settings, we see the emotional load women carry, often quietly. Supporting women’s health means validating their experiences, ensuring access to care, and creating environments where wellbeing is not sacrificed for responsibility.” Susan Sandy added.
Women’s Health Week is an opportunity to:
Encourage preventative health care
Promote mental health conversations
Support healthy boundaries and self-care
Challenge stigma around help-seeking
Advocate for gender-responsive health policy
Empowerment begins with recognition and continues with action.
This week, AAMHP encourages women to prioritise their wellbeing, and encourages communities to actively support the health of women in their lives.
Every woman’s health matters. Every woman deserves care, respect, and opportunity.
