Welcoming Hanukkah / Chanukah – Honouring Light, Resilience and Community

As Jewish communities across Australia and around the world gather to celebrate Hanukkah (Chanukah), the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) warmly acknowledges this important festival and extends our best wishes to all those marking the lighting of the first candle of the menorah.

Often known as Judaism’s “Festival of Lights,” Hanukkah commemorates resilience, faith, and the enduring power of hope during times of challenge. The progressive lighting of the menorah across eight nights is a powerful reminder that even a small light, kindled with care and intention, can grow and illuminate darkness.

At VMHPAA, we recognise the importance of honouring festivals of cultural and spiritual significance across Australia’s diverse communities. These moments invite all of us, regardless of background, to pause, reflect, and reconnect with shared human values: perseverance, belonging, compassion, and the strength found in community.

Shane Warren, Chari of VMHPAA shared: "In a time when many individuals and families are navigating uncertainty, stress, and social disconnection, the messages embedded in Hanukkah resonate deeply. It reminds us that hope is not passive it is something we actively tend, protect, and pass on, one light at a time."

VMHPAA affirms the importance of cultural respect and inclusion within mental health practice and community life. When we honour one another’s traditions, we strengthen social cohesion and create environments where people feel seen, valued, and safe to bring their whole selves.

"On behalf of the Association, I wish all those observing Hanukkah a meaningful and joyful celebration, filled with warmth, reflection, and light. Chag Sameach." Shane Warren concluded.
