VMHPAA Welcomes Government Recognition of Vocational Mental Health Practitioners in National Standards Review

The Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) is pleased to acknowledge recent correspondence from the Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon. Mark Butler MP, confirming that the concerns of vocationally trained counsellors and psychotherapists are being actively considered as part of the review of the Draft National Standards for Counsellors and Psychotherapists.

In his reply, Minister Butler affirmed that:

  • Feedback from the sector relating to vocationally trained counsellors is being reviewed alongside the updated draft standards.

  • The advice provided by VMHPAA is specifically recognised in this process.

  • Any future implementation of the National Standards will involve further consultation, with VMHPAA invited to participate directly.

As a recognised peak body, VMHPAA welcomes this acknowledgement and is heartened that the vital role vocationally trained practitioners play across the mental health workforce is being heard at the highest levels of government.

“VMHPAA represents a vast range of vocationally trained mental health professionals who are on the frontlines every day in community health, aged care, disability services, education, and private practice,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “We are encouraged that the Minister has assured us that our members’ voices are not only being heard but are central to shaping standards that will affect the future of the profession and, most importantly, the mental health and wellbeing of the Australian community.”

VMHPAA remains committed to working collaboratively with government, sector partners, and the broader community to ensure the National Standards are inclusive, equitable, and reflective of the diverse and highly skilled workforce that supports Australians’ mental health every day.
