Today, on International Non-Binary People’s Day, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association Australia (VMHPAA) proudly celebrates the identities, experiences, and contributions of non-binary people across Australia and around the world.
Observed annually on 14 July, this day serves as a reminder that gender diversity is real, that all people deserve to live as their authentic selves, and that mental health systems must evolve to ensure inclusive and affirming care for people of all genders.
“International Non-Binary People’s Day is more than symbolic,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA.“It’s a vital call to action for every mental health provider, organisation, and policymaker to create space where non-binary individuals are seen, respected, and supported. When we affirm identity, we protect mental wellbeing, and that’s everyone’s responsibility.”
Research continues to show that non-binary people experience disproportionately high rates of psychological distress, discrimination, and healthcare barriers. For those navigating these challenges, access to affirming, community-connected, and trauma-informed support can be life-changing.
Vocationally trained practitioners - including counsellors, peer workers, community support professionals, and lived experience practitioners - are uniquely placed to meet people where they are, often working in grassroots settings where trust, safety, and cultural humility are paramount.
VMHPAA calls on all mental health services and systems to:
Respect and affirm non-binary identities, including correct use of names and pronouns
Provide training in gender-affirming practice across all levels of service delivery
Include non-binary voices in policy and program design
Fund vocational pathways that empower diverse practitioners to support their communities
“True mental health care is not one-size-fits-all,” Mr Warren added.“It’s nuanced, it’s person-centred, and it must honour the full spectrum of human identity. Today we celebrate non-binary people, and every day we commit to building systems that don’t just include them, but uplift them.”
