Take Your Dog to Work Day: Celebrating Connection, Wellbeing and the Positive Impact of Companion Animals

On Take Your Dog to Work Day, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) celebrates the positive role companion animals can play in supporting mental health, workplace wellbeing, and social connection.


While not every workplace is suited to four-legged colleagues, the day serves as a reminder of the important contribution animals make to many people's emotional wellbeing.


Research continues to demonstrate that positive interactions with companion animals can help reduce stress, encourage physical activity, foster social connection, and promote a greater sense of calm and belonging.


VMHPAA Chair Shane Warren said:


"Companion animals have an extraordinary ability to bring people together. Whether it's a dog greeting colleagues at the office or encouraging someone to take a walk during the day, these small moments of connection can positively influence our mental wellbeing and workplace culture." Healthy workplaces are about more than productivity. They are environments where people feel psychologically safe, connected, and supported. For organisations able to safely accommodate pet-friendly initiatives, they can contribute to a more relaxed and engaged workplace culture.


VMHPAA Secretary Susan Sandy added:


"Animals have a unique way of helping people slow down, smile, and connect with one another. Even brief interactions can reduce stress and remind us of the importance of balance, kindness, and taking moments to care for ourselves during busy working days." [Susan Sandy]

VMHPAA encourages workplaces to continue exploring practical ways to promote employee wellbeing, recognising that healthy cultures are built through connection, flexibility, and shared experiences.


Whether today's wellbeing break involves bringing your dog to work, taking a walk with a pet, or simply spending time outdoors, every small step towards better balance supports healthier minds.


Sometimes, the best workplace wellbeing strategy comes with a wagging tail.
