As communities across Australia and around the world celebrate Songkran, the Thai New Year, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) extends warm wishes to all those observing this important cultural and spiritual festival.
Songkran is widely known for its joyful water celebrations, but at its heart it symbolises renewal, gratitude, respect for elders, cleansing of the past year, and hope for the year ahead. It is a time for families and communities to gather, reconnect, and begin anew.
VMHPAA Chair Shane Warren reflected on the deeper significance of the festival:
“Songkran reminds us that renewal is both personal and communal. The rituals of cleansing and blessing reflect something universal... our human need for fresh starts, forgiveness, and connection. Strong communities are one of the most protective factors for mental wellbeing.”
Community celebration plays a vital role in emotional health. Festivals such as Songkran strengthen social bonds, reduce isolation, and reinforce cultural identity, all of which are associated with improved mental health outcomes.
In times where many people feel disconnected or under pressure, traditions that bring people together in joy and shared meaning are deeply valuable.
VMHPAA Secretary Susan Sandy added:
“Cultural celebrations like Songkran nurture belonging. When people feel seen, connected, and supported within their community, resilience grows.”
As the water flows in celebration this week, VMHPAA encourages Australians to embrace the spirit of renewal; to reconnect with loved ones, to practise gratitude, and to carry forward compassion into the year ahead.
สุขสันต์วันสงกรานต์ — Happy Songkran.
