International Men’s Health Week: A Call for Men to Engage with Mind, Body, and Spirit

This International Men’s Health Week, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association Australia (VMHPAA) is calling on men across the country to take a proactive and holistic approach to their wellbeing - not just for themselves, but for their families, relationships, and communities.

With men continuing to face higher rates of suicide, heart disease, and preventable chronic illness, this week offers an opportunity to reflect on how we define health, and how we can do better.

“Health isn’t just about Instagram moments in the gym or selfies in bathroom mirrors looking hot,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA and a practicing counsellor and coach.“It’s deeper than that. Real health is about our mind, body, and spirit self. To thrive, we must engage with, care for, and nurture all parts of who we are.”

As mental health remains a major concern; many men still avoid seeking help due to stigma, shame, or outdated ideas about masculinity. VMHPAA advocates for increased access to vocationally trained mental health practitioners, who often work within community and grassroots settings to provide early intervention and non-clinical support.

“Healthy men are important for families and relationships,” said Susan Sandy, VMHPAA Secretary and relationship counsellor with over 25 years' experience.“When you take care of yourself, you’re better able to be the partner, father, friend or son you want to be. Prioritising your health isn’t selfish, it’s a gift to the people who love you.”

VMHPAA is proud to support the work of vocationally trained practitioners who connect with men in real, practical, and accessible ways. These professionals play a critical role in creating safe spaces for men to open up, reflect, and grow - mentally, emotionally, and physically.

This Men’s Health Week, the message is clear: Health is not a luxury or a look... It’s a lifestyle of self-awareness, self-care, and showing up for yourself and those around you.
