Today, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) joins the global community in celebrating the International Day of Older Persons - a time to recognise the invaluable wisdom, resilience, and contributions of older generations who continue to shape our families, communities, and collective story.
This year’s theme reminds us that aging is a journey of strength, experience, and learning. As mental health practitioners, we are called to ensure that this journey is met with dignity, inclusion, and access to care.
“Older Australians hold the stories that connect us, yet too often their mental health needs are overlooked,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “Respecting and supporting our elders means ensuring they are heard, valued, and connected. Mental wellbeing is not bound by age it’s a lifelong right.”
The VMHPAA highlights the importance of community connection, intergenerational respect, and age-inclusive mental health care. Practitioners across Australia are encouraged to reflect on how their services can better support older clients from addressing loneliness and grief to promoting purpose and participation in later life.
As Australia’s population ages, this day is a powerful reminder that wellbeing and resilience are built across the lifespan. By investing in community care and recognising the strength in our elders, we strengthen society as a whole.
Let’s take today to honour, listen, and learn because wisdom grows when it’s shared.
