Today, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) joins the international community in recognising Global Handwashing Day, a reminder that good hygiene is essential not only for physical health, but for mental wellbeing too.
Regular handwashing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent illness, protect ourselves and others, and promote a sense of safety and care in daily life. Beyond its physical health benefits, this simple act also supports mental health by reducing anxiety around contagion, building personal control, and fostering healthier environments in workplaces, schools, and homes.
“Small habits have big impacts,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “Something as basic as washing our hands helps protect the community and reinforces our sense of responsibility, hope, and collective wellbeing. It’s an everyday action that contributes to both physical and emotional resilience.”
VMHPAA encourages all Australians to view hygiene as part of self-care and community care. Integrating these healthy routines into daily life builds confidence, supports recovery, and reminds us that wellbeing is interconnected - body and mind working together.
Clean hands save lives — and nurture healthier communities.
