On this Global Day of Parents, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association Australia (VMHPAA) joins the world in recognising the vital role that parents play, not just in shaping future generations, but in quietly carrying the emotional, physical, and mental loads that keep families together.
As the frontline of emotional development and family resilience, parents are often the first responders in their children’s mental health journeys. Yet, they are too often under-supported and over-stretched.
“Parents are the original multitaskers: part-time nurses, full-time peacekeepers, part philosopher, part life coach,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA and father of three.“This day is a reminder that being a parent isn’t just a role, it’s an entire ecosystem of care, sacrifice, and growth. And they need support too.”
VMHPAA recognises the important work that vocationally trained mental health practitioners do in supporting families through counselling, parenting support, early intervention services, and lived-experience peer programs, particularly in times of relationship breakdown, financial stress, or trauma.
“After more than 25 years of working with parents and couples, I’ve learned one clear truth,” said Susan Sandy, VMHPAA Secretary and long-time relationship counsellor.“You can’t pour from an empty cup. Supporting parents - emotionally, mentally, and practically - creates stronger families, healthier communities, and better outcomes for children.”
Whether it’s helping a single dad navigate co-parenting, supporting new mothers adjusting to life after birth, or guiding families through conflict, vocational practitioners are embedded in the real-life challenges and joys of parenting. Their work is grounded in empathy, cultural connection, and practical tools.
This Global Day of Parents, VMHPAA calls on policymakers, community leaders, and service providers to value, invest in, and uplift parents - not only as caregivers, but as crucial pillars of the mental health system.
