AWARENESS STATEMENT
For Immediate Release
8 December 2025

The Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) recognises Bodhi Day, observed annually on 8 December, which commemorates the moment the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni), attained enlightenment- bodhi in Sanskrit and Pali.
Bodhi Day invites reflection on wisdom, compassion, and the possibility of awakening in everyday life. Across many Buddhist traditions (including Zen, where it is also known as Rōhatsu), people may mark the day with meditation, chanting or sutra reading, tea and simple meals, acts of kindness, and the gentle glow of lights symbolising insight and compassion.
“Bodhi Day reminds us that stillness and insight can grow even amid life’s pressures,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “Whether you observe through meditation, service, or quiet reflection, may this day renew your commitment to compassion for yourself and for others.”
VMHPAA extends warm wishes to all who observe Bodhi Day and acknowledges the rich contributions of Buddhist communities across Australia. We reaffirm our commitment to culturally safe, accessible mental-health support in every community.
