PUBLIC RESPONSE / AWARENESS STATEMENT
For Immediate Release
26 January 2026

For some, it is a day of celebration and pride. For others, it carries grief, anger, or a reminder of loss and injustice. For many, it is a mixture of all of these things.
At VMHPAA, we recognise that national days can surface complex emotions, shaped by history, culture, identity, and lived experience. There is no single way to feel today and all responses deserve respect.
We encourage Australians to meet one another with care and curiosity: to listen, to acknowledge different truths, and to honour the stories that sit alongside our own.
Today is also a moment to turn towards one another and say: thank you, welcome, and I’m glad to be sharing this journey together.
To those becoming Australian citizens today - welcome.
To First Nations peoples - we acknowledge the enduring connection to Country and the strength of culture that continues to shape this nation.
To all who call this place home - may today be held with kindness, reflection, and care.
If this day is difficult for you, please know you are not alone, and support is available.
Let’s look after ourselves, and each other, today and every day.
