International Literacy Day: VMHPAA Recognises Literacy as a Foundation for Mental Wellbeing and Social Empowerment

Today, on International Literacy Day, the Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) celebrates the transformative power of literacy, not only as an educational right, but as a cornerstone of mental wellbeing, self-empowerment, and community connection.

Literacy is far more than the ability to read and write. It is the gateway to opportunity, a vital tool for navigating healthcare, employment, relationships, and emotional expression. For individuals facing mental health challenges, literacy enables access to information, resources, support systems, and a sense of control over their personal journeys.

“Every word learned is a step toward independence, confidence, and connection,” said Shane Warren, Chair of VMHPAA. “Vocationally trained mental health practitioners often see the ripple effect of literacy in their work - how it empowers people to engage, advocate, and imagine better futures for themselves.”

VMHPAA particularly acknowledges the role of community-based counsellors, educators, and lived experience practitioners in bridging the gap between literacy and wellbeing. In schools, correctional facilities, migrant and refugee services, and community centres, these professionals are uniquely placed to support both emotional and educational resilience.

“Literacy strengthens more than minds, it builds lives,” added Susan Sandy, VMHPAA Secretary and education wellbeing leader. “When people can read, write, and understand their world, they’re more likely to seek help, find hope, and support others.”

VMHPAA calls for:

  • Greater investment in mental health literacy programs embedded in vocational settings

  • Cross-sector partnerships between education and mental health services

  • Recognition of literacy development as a protective factor in mental health and suicide prevention efforts

Let us mark this day by reaffirming our shared responsibility to break down barriers to literacy, so that every individual, regardless of background or circumstance, has the chance to thrive.
